Caring for a Red Tiger Lotus

The red tiger lotus is a freshwater pond and aquarium plant native to East Africa and Southeast Asia. When properly cared for, the plant can grow up to 2 feet tall and will produce sturdy, fragrant ornamental blossoms. Lotus plants, being non-toxic, are compatible with goldfish that thrive in warm, tropical climates. Plant the red tiger lotus in a pot to control its location and to prevent overgrowth and competition with other pond features.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a pond pot with clay loam or a potting soil labeled for use with aquatic plants.

    • 2

Plant the lotus’ tubular stem 2 inches deep in the soil and place stones around it to weigh it down until the roots establish.

    • 3

Cover the top of the soil with 1 inch of aquarium gravel to prevent soil from escaping when you submerge the pot.

    • 4

Submerge the pot under water so the rim is several inches below water level and the plant shoots up above water.

    • 5

Set the pond or aquarium heater to 75 degrees F. to provide a warm environment for the lotus. Check the temperature requirements for any animals you have in the pond to ensure compatibility.

    • 6

Add two to four fertilizer tablets to the lotus’ soil every three to four weeks. Follow the directions on the fertilizer package regarding the appropriate dose and frequency.

    • 7

Prune stems and leaves above water level to maintain an attractive shape or to remove unhealthy growth. Do not prune plant structures below water level, as the lotus uses the stems to provide oxygen.
