How to Germinate Agave Havardiana Seeds

Agave havardiana, also known as a century plant or Harvard agave, is a cold hardy plant, tolerant of temperatures as cold as 15 degrees Fahrenheit. It grows about 3 feet high with an equal spread. An Agave havardiana also puts forth spectacular flower stalks that reach up to 15 feet tall. However, it only blooms once during its life and then dies, a milestone that typically occurs 20 to 50 years after planting. A common way to propagate this plant is by seed, which is often available at nurseries and online.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill 2-inch planting pots or a seed tray with potting soil. Leave 1/2 inch of space between the rim and potting soil.

    • 2

Water the soil so it is slightly moist.

    • 3

Place two seeds, about a 1/2 inch apart, on top of the soil in each planting pot or compartment. Most likely, not all the seeds will germinate.

    • 4

Cover the seeds with a thin layer of additional, moist potting soil. Parts of the seeds should be visible so light and oxygen can reach them.

    • 5

Keep the pots or seed tray in a bright location, but out of direct sunlight. Maintain temperatures approximately 80 degrees Fahrenheit. A warming tray or pad, available from garden centers or online, facilitates the maintenance of even temperatures.

    • 6

Water the seeds once or twice a week to keep the soil moist. Agave havardiana seeds take one to three weeks to germinate under warm conditions. In cooler conditions, it could take between 30 to 90 days for the seeds to germinate.
