Put on a pair of gardening gloves and remove the excess soil from around and over the ludisia discolor’s root ball. Gently lift the plant from the pot, paying attention to avoid grasping it around the root ball.
Sterilize a pair of sharp pruning shears with rubbing alcohol and cut away any dried or damaged areas of stems, leaves and the root ball.
Pull apart the root ball carefully, paying attention that each division features freshly formed, healthy root shoots and at least two to three pseudobulbs, which are areas of thickened stems the plant uses to store moisture.
Lay the divided jewel orchid onto a piece of paper towel, sprinkle it with a commercial plant fungicide and allow it to remain, and absorb the fungicide, overnight. During this time fill enough clay pots to accommodate the divided root ball with all-purpose potting soil. Rinse the soil before placing it into pots to remove any excess particulates that can shock the fragile orchid.
Lower the divided orchids inside the pot and cover the root ball with the potting soil. Tamper the soil with your hand and provide the plant with a healthy drink of water and a commercial fertilizer designed for use on orchids.
