How to Propagate Dudleya

The Dudleya genus includes more than 50 varieties of succulent rosettes. These plants are native to the southwestern regions of North America and go dormant during the heat of summer and then come to life in the fall. Propagation of Dudleya is from offsets or baby plants for most varieties that will typically root fairly easily. The best time to remove and plant the offsets is in the fall as the Dudleya begins to grow.

Things You'll Need

  • Knife
  • Pot
  • Cactus soil mix

Instructions

    • 1

Use a sharp knife or razor blade to cut beneath the baby Dudleya's rosette or offset, if you cannot remove it by gently pulling on it.

    • 2

Place the rosette in a warm location out of direct sunlight for three days. This allows a callous to form on the rosette at the point of the cut. The callous helps prevent rot.

    • 3

Fill a pot that is slightly larger than the Dudleya offset with a cactus-type soil mix. Only use pots with drainage holes.

    • 4

Make a small indentation in the soil that is just deep enough to hold the Dudleya upright. Place the plant in the pot and firm the soil against it.

    • 5

Dampen the soil, but allow it to dry before watering again. Never water the Dudleya more than once a week.

    • 6

Place the pot in a location with bright, but indirect sunlight.
