Serena Angelonia Plant Care

Serena angelonia is also known as summer snapdragon. It features small, upright spikes of pink, white and lavender flowers offset by green foliage. This plant originally comes from South America, but it is common North America as an annual.

  1. Location

    • The serena angelonia grows best in USDA hardiness zones 1 through 12. When you are looking to place your serena angelonia in your garden, look for a location that gets six to eight hours of full sun every day. These plants can thrive in flower beds, containers or hanging baskets.

    Features

    • The serena angelonia is a very tough and hardy plant, and as such, it needs very little care once it has been planted. It should be watered before the soil feels completely dry, but as this is drought-resistant plant, it can cope very well in hot, dry summers.

    Time Frame

    • When you are growing serena angelonia from seed, you will discover that it can go from seed to flowering adult plant within three months. In areas where it is even warmer, this time frame can be reduced to 10 weeks. Knowing this can help you coordinate when your flower garden will come to full bloom. When you are looking to germinate serena angelonia seeds, it will take five days using soil with a pH of 5.5 to 6.0

    Considerations

    • Though this plant requires very little in the way of feeding or defense from insects or deer, it can be benefit from a twice-weekly application of mild fertilizer. Also, during the middle of the growing season, you can shear back the stalks by about 50 percent to revive the blossoms.

    Size

    • The adult serena angelonia will grow to be between 10 and 12 inches high, and between 12 and 14 inches wide. When you plant it, keep this size in mind and make sure to leave 8 to 10 inches of space in all directions around each plant.
