How to Prune Orange Sedge Ornamental Grass

Orange sedge is an ornamental grass that grows in clumps with blades that can reach up to 18 inches tall. During the winter, the grass turns brown and will become dry. Pruning the Orange sedge involves cutting back the dead grass to encourage the plant to produce new blades. Pruning also keeps the garden looking tidy. If your winters are extreme enough that your temperatures reach below 0 degrees Fahrenheit, you will simply remove the sedge.

Things You'll Need

  • Pruning shears

Instructions

    • 1

Wait until early spring to prune Orange sedge. The grass will be brown instead of the bright orange color.

    • 2

Cut back the blades to one-third their previous height. Remove the cut blades and compost them or throw them in the trash. If your winter temperatures get to below 0 degrees Fahrenheit, the plant will be unsalvageable and you can cut it back to the ground.

Repeat this pruning annually. Throughout the year, remove any dead or damaged blades.
