Prunella Vulgaris Remedies

Prunella vulgaris is a perennial herb commonly known as heal-all, and it is often used in a variety of home remedies. This herb has also shown anti-viral properties against the herpes simplex virus. Containing lignin-carbohydrate complex, it can be applied to lesions to treat herpes viruses responsible for cold sores and genital herpes outbreaks. Prunella vulgaris can be applied as a balm, mouth rinse, ointment or even consumed as a tea.

  1. Prunella Vulgaris

    • Prunella vulgaris is a plant of the self-heal species and is also known as heal-all (Healall) or Selfheal. Belonging to the mint family, Prunella vulgaris is often considered to be weedy or invasive by homeowners. This medicinal herb has lance-shaped leaves that are serrated and reddish at the tip. Two-lipped flowers are lavender in color and grow from a whirled cluster.

      Heal-all's leaves and small flowers are edible, and can be eaten in salads, soups and stews or boiled as a tea.

      This herb is considered to be medicinal because it is high in antioxidants, essential oil, Pentacyclic triterpenes, tannin, beta carotene and rutin. Prunella vulgaris also contains vitamins C, K and B1. It is also used as a diuretic, liver stimulant, astringent and antispasmodic.

    Topical Remedy

    • Prunella vulgaris can be used as a home remedy for antibacterial and antiseptic purposes by applying as a poultice to bruises, cuts and wounds.

      A Prunella vulgaris-infused oil and beeswax herbal salve can be used as an ointment for external application. Burns or some allergic reactions such as rashes, as well as hemorrhoids, can be treated with the ointment .

    Internal Remedies

    • A Prunella vulgaris tea can be gargled and used as a mouthwash to treat sore throat, laryngitis or diphtheria. Mouth sores, gum problems and thrush can also be treated using this herbal mouthwash remedy.

      Its astringent and antioxidant benefits make it a good remedy for acne. A Prunella vulgaris tea can be chilled, then applied gently with a cotton ball to treat acne and irritated skin.
