How to Make Plant Staking Hoops

Many plants need the extra support of plant stakes, especially tall plants. Heavy winds and rain can cause unsupported plants to bend and droop, crushing their ability to stand tall and sturdy. Installing plant-staking hoops around flowers and vegetable plants increases their overall growth and sustainability. Plant-staking hoops are available for purchase at most home and garden supply stores, but many people prefer to make their own.

Things You'll Need

  • 3 wooden stakes or metal posts
  • Metal ring
  • Nylon ties
  • Hammer or sledgehammer

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the plant-staking hoop's required height and width by the plant's potential height and width. Each plant-staking hoop consists of three wooden stakes or metal posts and one metal ring. Generally, each stake or post should be about 1 foot taller than the plant before the stake or post is pushed into the ground. The metal ring should be about the same size as the plant's expected width.

    • 2

Push the three wooden stakes or metal posts into the ground at an equal distance from each other and just outside the plant's drip line. The drip line is where the plant's leaves and stems drip water when it rains or when you water the plant. Hammer each stake or post into the ground, ensuring it stands solidly and its top is about 1 foot taller than the plant's potential height.

    • 3

Wrap and knot nylon ties around each stake or post 1 inch from its top. Leave ample nylon to tie around the metal ring.

    • 4

Place the metal ring around the perimeter of the stakes or posts at the same height as the nylon ties. Attach the nylon ties to the metal ring with tight-fitting knots. Verify that the metal ring is securely in place.
