How to Grow Lentil Sprouts for Poultry

Sprouting has been a means of accentuating the nutritional value in human grains and seeds for thousands of years. However, the same high nutrient content can benefit farm animals as well, passing them on to the goods they produce. This is especially true for poultry. The health and the nutritional value of eggs and flesh increase when fed sprouts. Lentils are not only a grain with a high amount of protein, they also sprout well and are perfect fodder for chicken.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 food buckets, 5 gallons
  • Drill
  • 1/16-inch drill bit
  • Raw lentil seeds

Instructions

    • 1

Place one bucket to the side. Set the second bucket upside down on your work surface.

    • 2

Insert the drill bit in to the drill. Drill holes around the bottom of the bucket, about 2 inches apart around the first bottom foot of the bucket. This allows the grains to drain.

    • 3

Pour the lentils into the bucket without holes. Pour water over them, covering them by 1 inch of water.

    • 4

Allow the bucket to soak for 24 hours. Pour the contents of the soaking lentils in to the second bucket. Rinse them thoroughly under running water.

    • 5

Pour the lentils back in to the soaking bucket and cover them with fresh water. Allow them to soak for another 24 hours, and then drain and rinse. Repeat another two to three times until they have sprouted to the desired amount.
