Height of Red Yarrows

Red-flowered yarrows (Achillea millefolia cultivars) were developed from common yarrow (Achillea millefolia), a white-flowered plant that grows 1 to 3 feet tall with an equal spread, hardy to U.S. Department of Agriculture zones 3 through 9. Common yarrow is a perennial herb with ferny foliage and masses of flat-topped flower clusters that bloom from spring into summer. The plant can become invasive. Its red-flowered progeny come from two sources: selection for flower color within the species and hybridization with other yarrows.
  1. General Characteristics of Red Yarrows

    • Red-flowered yarrows grow their foliage quickly, producing flower stalks in late spring to early summer. Flowering height generally varies from 18 to 36 inches tall, varying with the particular cultivar. Taller is not always better, since tall flower stalks tend to flop over. Red-flowered yarrows benefit from cutting back the flowering stems to the basal foliage before seeds form. This tidies the plant and gives it a chance to produce a second round of flower stalks. Flowers are suitable for fresh or dried floral arrangements.

    Deep Red Flowers

    • "Red Velvet" (Achillea millefolium "Red Velvet") possesses rich red flowers that are more fade-resistant than other varieties. Usually yarrow flowers fade in color as they age, with color gradations present on the plants as blooming progresses, so a fade-resistant variety is a valuable garden addition. The plant has gray-green leaves that quickly grow to 1 foot tall, with height increasing to 3 feet when "Red Velvet" is in bloom. It is hardy to U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 3 through 9. The cultivar "Angelique" (Achillea millefolium "Angelique") has deep, blood-red flowers atop green foliage in USDA zones 4 through 8. The plant reaches 20 to 24 inches tall.

    Bright Red Flowers

    • Medium-green leaves of "Red Beauty" contrast well with the cerise-red flowers. Growing in USDA zones 3 through 8, "Red Beauty" typically has bloom stalks between 18 and 24 inches tall. "Fanal," also known as "The Beacon," grows 2 feet tall in USDA zones 3a through 9b. Its bright red flowers eventually fade to yellow. "Strawberry Seduction" has a large central yellow disc surrounded by strawberry-red ray petals on sturdy stalks that rise 18 to 20 inches above dark green foliage. It grows in USDA zones 4 through 9 and benefits from deadheading.

    Orange-Red Flowers

    • The gray-green foliage of "Paprika" supports 25-inch flower stalks with clusters of reddish-orange flowers. "Terra Cotta" has taller flower stalks, from 30 to 36 inches high, with bright peach flowers aging to orange-brown-red flowers displayed against silver-green leaves. A cultivar with shorter stems less likely to flop, "Walther Funcke" has gray-green foliage and long-lasting brick-red flowers that hold the color for a long time. "Walther Funcke" grows 12 to 24 inches tall. All three of these plants are hardy in USDA zones 3 through 8.
