How to Care for Sedum Oaxacanum

Sedum oaxacanum is a succulent plant and a member of a group of plants commonly known as stonecrops. S. oaxacanum bears red or purple stems and grows 2 to 3 inches in height with a 12- to 18-inch spread. Like most stonecrops, S. oaxacanum requires little to no water, making it ideal for a rock or xeriscape garden. Sedum oaxacanum, as its name suggests, is native to the mountains of southern Mexico.

Things You'll Need

  • Coarse sand or poultry grit
  • Fertilizer

Instructions

    • 1

Grow the S. oaxacanum in full sun, all day and gritty soil. If your soil is heavy, add 3 to 4 inches of coarse sand or poultry grit. Plant the sedum at the same depth as it is growing in the nursery container.

    • 2

Water the S. oaxacanum only when the soil is completely dry, and only if it appears that the plant is wilting. It is capable of going long periods without water. Water the base of the plant just enough to moisten the top 6 inches of soil.

    • 3

Fertilize S. oaxacanum every spring as it begins growing. Use 1/2 cup of an all-purpose granular fertilizer and sprinkle it on the soil around the sedum. Water to a depth of 6 inches after applying.
