Trimming Aztec Grass

Aztec grass, also called lilyturf, is an evergreen ornamental that grows no more than 2 feet tall. In the summer it forms thick clumps when mature and produces purple or white blooms, depending upon the variety. Aztec grass is hardy in U.S. Department of Agriculture zones 6 to 10 and grows well in shade or sun. It requires little attention to thrive once it's well-established. Trimming Aztec grass back early in the growing season eliminates damaged growth and encourages the development of healthy new foliage.

Things You'll Need

  • Lawn mower
  • 10-10-10 fertilizer

Instructions

    • 1

Set the lawn mower blade to the highest cutting level.

    • 2

Mow over Aztec grass during very early spring, before new foliage appears.

    • 3

Remove the clippings, by hand, to minimize the risk of disease and to allow new growth to emerge more quickly.

    • 4

Feed with 10-10-10 fertilizer to give Aztec grass a boost of nutrients. Apply 1/4 cup near the base of each clump, but do not allow it to rest against the foliage because this may cause damage.

    • 5

Water Aztec grass deeply just after fertilizing so that it penetrates the soil thoroughly.
