How to Trim Primrose

Primrose, or primula, is capable of producing vibrant flowers that cover a wide range of different colors. These perennial plants can light up just about any type of garden in the spring and summer months. However, to keep these plants looking their best, you will need to prune and groom your primroses at least two to three times throughout the growing season.

Things You'll Need

  • Garden shears

Instructions

    • 1

Inspect your primrose plants regularly. Remove any brown and shriveled petals and blooms from your primrose plants by plucking them off with your fingers or snipping them off with pruning shears.

    • 2

Examine the leaves of the primrose plants for damage, discoloration and disease. If you notice any discoloring or damage, cut away the problem leaves at the base of the primrose.

    • 3

Remove the excess bottom stems and leaves with garden shears. Prune the primrose down to the soil in the spring if you would like to stimulate new growth.

    • 4

Cut away the plant tops after the first frost has hit in autumn and the leaves have browned. Prune away the leaves at the soil level as well to prepare the primrose for winter.
