How to Prune Carex Red Rooster Grass

Red Rooster, a cultivar of the perennial ornamental grass Carex buchananii, is named for the reddish hue its blades take on in the late fall and winter. Carex ornamental grasses, also commonly known as sedges, are hearty plants tolerating cold, drought and heat with equanimity, according to Michigan State University Extension. Pruning requirements for Red Rooster can vary somewhat by growing climate. In colder climes, more pruning is generally required, but the plant still remains rooted in the low-maintenance category when compared to other species.

Things You'll Need

  • Gloves
  • Secateurs
  • Pruning shears

Instructions

    • 1

Prune your Carex "Red Rooster" in the very late winter or early spring before new growth is visible. This allows the decorative grass to enhance the landscape through winter, provide small animal habitat, and insulates the perennial's root mass from cold weather conditions.

    • 2

Don a pair of protective garden gloves to protect your hands from the razor-sharp edges of Carex grass blades when pruning or working with the plants.

    • 3

Remove any dead, bent or broken grass stalks down to the crown of the plant an inch or so above the soil. Pull the cuttings cleanly from the clump to make way for new growth.

    • 4

Shear off all of the dead or damaged top foliage in cold climes or when winter weather has been unusually harsh. Make the cut 1 to 2 inches above the soil and clear away the cuttings. The new blades will emerge through the clump crown in later spring.
