How to Keep Tall Peonies Upright in the Landscape

Peonies flower for only a short time in the spring or early summer, but the large, full flowers make the plants a worthwhile garden addition. Even after blooming, peonies continue providing background color to the garden with their lush, green foliage that remains through summer. The larger, taller-growing varieties have weak stems that can't support the huge blossoms. Giving the plants support keeps the flowers upright so the plants don't drag on the ground.

Things You'll Need

  • Stakes
  • Twine

Instructions

    • 1

Place three stakes around the perimeter of the peony bush once it resumes growth in the spring before it begins flowering. Use stakes matching the expected height of the peony variety. Most peonies grow between 2 and 4 feet tall.

    • 2

Wrap twine around the three stakes, enclosing the plant in the center. Wrap the twine 6 inches up from soil level.

    • 3

Add a second wrapping of twine 12 inches up from soil level once the peonies have grown to its height. Continue adding another wrapping of twine up the stakes for every 4 to 6 inches of height as the plant grows.

    • 4

Place a final wrapping of twine around the stakes just beneath the blossoms once the peonies begin setting buds. The twine holds the entire bush upright once the flowers begin opening.
