Cosmopolitan grass (Miscanthus sinensis var. condensatus “Cosmopolitan”) is an upright-growing ornamental grass with green leaves that are about 1 1/2 inches wide and have white margins. Cosmopolitan is considered a large grass, growing from 8 to 10 feet in height, with tall plumes of fluffy flowers in late summer. Toward the end of the growing season, Cosmopolitan will die back gradually, eventually becoming a mass of brown foliage. A trim helps make the garden look tidy again, and the grass will return when the weather warms. If you live in a region with mild winters, trim the Cosmopolitan grass in January; otherwise, wait until the end of winter to cut it back.
Begin cutting at the outside of the Cosmopolitan grass clump, shearing the blades to a height of 6 inches.
Grab a handful of Cosmopolitan grass behind the clump you just cut and shear it. Continue to cut from the outside to the opposite side of the clump until the entire plant is cut down.
Use pruning shears or the hedging shears to even out the clump so that all blades are the same height.
Rake the bed around the Cosmopolitan grass to remove pruning debris.
Spread a 2-inch layer of mulch over the bed and water the Cosmopolitan grass to a depth of 6 inches.
