How to Propagate Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow Plants

"Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow" is the common name for Brunfelsia, a flowering evergreen shrub grown in pots indoors or outside in zones 9 to 12. The name comes from the flowers that first are purple--yesterday; then change to pale violet--today; then to white-- tomorrow. Propagation, or generating new plants, is done either by division or by cuttings. Brunfelsia is propagated with soft, green wood cuttings, also called soft-tip cuttings.

Things You'll Need

  • Sharp blade
  • Florists foam (optional)
  • Bowl
  • Saucer

Instructions

    • 1

Examine your Brunfelsia plant to identify appropriate stems to cut. You need to find new growth to cut your stems from. You can tell where the new growth is by looking for where the stem is starting to harden and to take on the color of the mature wood. Above that is your new growth.

    • 2

Use a sharp blade to cut off a section of stem of your Brunfelsia plant. Make sure that you cut a section with a node at both the top and bottom of the section. A node is where a bud appears on the stem. Make additional cuttings by slicing the section vertically.

    • 3

For outdoor Brunfelsia plants, plant your cuttings directly in the ground with part of the cutting below and part above the ground. Water the cuttings thoroughly and keep the soil moist.

Cut your florist's foam into small cubes and soak them in water for 15 minutes. Insert the cuttings from your indoor Brunfelsia plant into the foam with the leaves just above the surface. Keep the cuttings moist and when you notice root growth, plant the foam cubes into small pots, covering the foam completely so that the roots don't dry out.
