How to Overwinter Clematis in a Pot Brought Indoors for New Growth

In 1862, the British Jackman Nursery introduced Clematis jackmanii, spurring gardeners around the world to grow this hardy, flowering vine. The clematis genus includes nearly 300 different species, and if you have one in your garden, you don't want its beauty to fade due to frosty winter temperatures. If you grow clematis in a container, you can bring the plant indoors to protect it from the cold. This keeps the clematis growing throughout the winter.

Things You'll Need

  • Five-inch container
  • Lime
  • Pruners
  • Trellis

Instructions

    • 1

Transfer the clematis to a larger container filled with loamy soil. A five-inch container is ideal. Mix one tablespoon of lime into the soil to reduce acidity.

    • 2

Cut off any diseased branches or leaves. Inspect the plant carefully for insects, and remove them if you find any.

    • 3

Place a three-foot trellis in the container. Clematis needs support as it grows larger.

    • 4

Put the clematis in a sunny room where the temperature stays about 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep the soil moist, but not soggy. These conditions encourage the clematis to keep growing and flowering over the winter.
