Time plays an important part in regards to size. Brown crimini mushrooms commonly found at grocery stores are harvested in early stages for the smallest buttons that measure 1 inch in diameter. When allowed to fully mature they turn into large Portobello mushrooms that can have a diameter of 6 inches!
Naturally large and edible, the Giant Puffball grows to 3 feet across providing food for a small village. It does not have gills and must be picked before the spores inside turn into dust. Other varieties such as oyster mushrooms can grow as big as 4 inches tall in clusters. White button mushrooms are harvested from 1 to 3 inches in diameter.
The higher the relative humidity, the larger the mushroom. Dry environments remove moisture from mushrooms, which causes them to grow smaller.
