How Big Can Some Mushrooms Grow?

Mushrooms range in size from a pin head to those that are 3 feet in diameter such as the Giant Puffball, which is edible. Mushroom size depends on environmental factors such as humidity, nutrients available from decaying wood and leaf matter in the soil, and water in the form of rain that saturates soil.
  1. Time

    • Time plays an important part in regards to size. Brown crimini mushrooms commonly found at grocery stores are harvested in early stages for the smallest buttons that measure 1 inch in diameter. When allowed to fully mature they turn into large Portobello mushrooms that can have a diameter of 6 inches!

    Varieties

    • Naturally large and edible, the Giant Puffball grows to 3 feet across providing food for a small village. It does not have gills and must be picked before the spores inside turn into dust. Other varieties such as oyster mushrooms can grow as big as 4 inches tall in clusters. White button mushrooms are harvested from 1 to 3 inches in diameter.

    Humidity

    • The higher the relative humidity, the larger the mushroom. Dry environments remove moisture from mushrooms, which causes them to grow smaller.
