I Have Mushrooms Growing in My Flower Bed

Flowers enjoy healthy soil and we provide it in the form of compost and mulch, which also happens to be the favorite environment for mushrooms. Mushrooms require cool temperatures, high humidity and dead wood on which to grow.
  1. Food

    • Mushrooms are often seen popping up in flower beds when a thick layer of wood chips have been put down as mulch. Dead and decaying wood is mushroom food, and they can be found growing on top of wood.

    Temperature

    • Mushrooms grow well when temperatures are cool. Tall flowering plants provide the necessary shade, while wood mulch keeps the soil cool in the summer, providing a perfect habitat for mushrooms to grow.

    Moisture

    • A well-cared-for flower garden receives regular watering, and mushrooms thrive in moist environments. Mushrooms pop above the surface of the soil when soil is evenly moist but not puddling, and compost allows for moisture retention with perfect drainage.

    Identification

    • Fly agaric mushrooms are deadly. Do not eat them.

Edible mushrooms are highly desirable and it takes a knowledgeable person and a field guide to properly identify edible fungi. Do not eat a mushroom if identification is doubtful, since poisonous mushrooms can make one very sick and even cause death.
