How to Make Substrate Jars

According to the Food Reference, the history of mushrooms and their importance to mankind is a long one. In ancient Egypt, mushrooms were believed to give immortal life when eaten. As time progressed, other traits were attributed to them, such as super-strength, the ability of the soul to find the gods or the ability to find lost possessions. Growing mushrooms also has a long history, and it is something you can do yourself with substrate jars. Rather than buy these jars, you can make them yourself.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn on the oven to 100 degrees Fahrenheit. This creates a contamination-free zone, as the heat of the oven forces all dirt and impurities from inside.

    • 2

Clean all your jars and nails with rubbing alcohol.

    • 3

Drive two finish nails into the insert of the lid to make two holes. Do not remove the nails.

    • 4

Place the jar with the insert and ring in the oven and remove the nails. This releases the air inside the jar, creating a vacuum. By creating a vacuum, you keep the inside of the jar clean from contamination.

    • 5

Put cloth tape over the holes to allow air to go into the jar while filtering impurities. Keep the door of the oven open as you perform this step.

    • 6

Remove the jar from the oven to cool.
