The most commonly grow mushroom in the world is the champignon mushroom, though people grow many different types of mushrooms in their vegetable garden or indoor gardens. Depending on the look and flavor that you want to achieve from the mushroom, you can harvest when the mushroom is in a button, cup or flat stage.

     Grip the mushroom at its base and twist your hand upward.

     Break the mushroom base at the top layer of the soil or casing surface and pull it up out of the soil. Try to avoid leaving mushroom stumps in the soil bed.

     Brush off any soil or compost from the mushroom, which can quickly discolor the cap and affect its flavor.
