- 3-foot long, 5-inch diameter oak log cut during the dormant season
- Electric drill with 1/4-inch diameter drill bit
- King oyster mushroom plugs
- Rubber mallet
- Paraffin block
- Saucepan

Drill 2-inch long holes in the oak log, evenly spaced apart, with the drill and bit.

Insert the mushroom plugs into the drilled holes and pound them in even with the log surface with the mallet.

Melt the paraffin in the saucepan. Paint over each mushroom plug with the wax to protect the mushroom spawn from contamination.

Place the oak log in a location away from sunlight and mist the log with water every day. King oyster mushrooms will begin to grow in several days.
