How to Grow Trumpet Royale

Trumpet Royale is the trademarked name for a strain of oyster mushroom that commonly grows in Europe, Asia and some parts of Africa. Also known as King Oyster, Royal Trumpet, French Horn and a few variations, the botanical name for oyster mushrooms is Pleurotus eryngii. The fungus has reputed medicinal uses as well as gourmet cooking applications. The Trumpet Royale has a nutty flavor and a firm texture, with long white stems and brownish caps. The mushrooms grow easily from pre-packaged kits.

Instructions

    • 1

Order your Trumpet Royale Mushroom home growing kit from one of the reputable dealers who specialize in distributing them. Gourmet Mushrooms Inc. holds the trademark on this particular strain of mushrooms and you can purchase them directly through an 800 number hotline or their website.

Unwrap and remove the kit items from the box. You'll receive a log that is pre-innoculated with the mushroom spores. The kit includes clear instructions for each simple step. Primarily, you will leave the log in the bag it came in, opening the bag enough to cut a 3/4 inch diameter by 2- or 3-inch deep hole in the log. Next, fill the hole with with water and place the plastic encased log on a platter or bowl to prevent any leakage.

    • 3

Place the mushroom log onto a table, desk, shelf or counter space in a room where you can maintain the temperature and where it can get fresh air. The ideal temperature for growing Trumpet Royale mushrooms is no lower than 62 degrees and up to 67 degrees Fahrenheit. The log will then require very little care beyond getting sunlight. It only takes up a 6-inch by 6-inch space.

    • 4

Harvest mushrooms when they mature, about a month after growth begins. The log has been in a sterile environment and the mushrooms will have had a head start on growth time. You should see primordia -- or infant mushrooms -- about nine days after your kit arrives. You may get one giant mushroom or multiple small clusters. Cut them when they are large enough for your own needs, and use them fresh. You may get two flushes, or two different crops.

    • 5

Reorder new logs or growing kits as needed. They're not "eternal." Mushrooms that grow on the log eventually consume the nutrients in the wood, so there's less biomass available for future groups.
