How to Plant Portobello Mushrooms

Portobellos, also known as portabellas, are a commonly cultivated edible mushroom. While you can purchase them from the store, you can also plant Portobello mushrooms to grow them at home. You will need supplies from a specialty mushroom growing store or website. Once you have your supplies, you'll need about eight weeks for the Portobello mushrooms to mature. Keep in mind, you will need to be available for the last four to six weeks to keep the Portobello mushrooms moistened daily; otherwise, they will not grow.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Place the growing tray in an area where the constant temperature is about 70 degrees Fahrenheit. If the temperature rises or falls more than 5 degrees Fahrenheit, it could ruin the mushrooms’ growth.

    • 2

Pour the compost into the growing tray, filling it to 1/2 an inch from the top. Spray the compost with water until it is moist but not soaked.

    • 3

Sprinkle a 1/8-inch layer of dry spawn flakes over the top of the compost. In 14 to 21 days, a thin, soft white webbing-type material will begin to grow over the surface of the compost and the dry spawn flakes.

    • 4

Spread 2 inches of peat moss over the webbing-covered compost and dry spawn flakes. Spray it with water to dampen it, then place two layers of newspaper over the top. Dampen the sheets of newspaper with water three times a day to keep them moist.

    • 5

Remove the sheets of newspaper after two weeks and moisten the peat moss three times a day. Within two days, the Portobello mushrooms will begin to grow. Continue spraying them three times a day until they reach the size you desire.

    • 6

Harvest the Portobello mushrooms by picking them from the base of the stem. Use the Portobello mushrooms within 24 hours of harvesting.
