Supplies to Buy for Mushroom Growing

Mushrooms are fun to grow at home as a family project or to undertake as a cash crop. The easiest way to obtain all your materials is to purchase a mushroom growing kit. This is a viable option if you are growing mushrooms as a family project or for home use. After deciding which variety or varieties of mushrooms you wish to grow, you can have fresh mushrooms in about 4 to 6 weeks. Kits start at about $25 and range to about $70.

  1. Spores or Spawn?

    • If you are not utilizing a kit, you will have to purchase mushroom spore or spawn. A fungal spore is like a seed for a plant. Spores are very tiny and must be planted with a syringe. Mushroom spawn are easier to handle. Mushroom spawn are like seedlings-larger and easier to handle than spores-and can be planted directly in the growing medium.

    Growing Medium

    • The medium you use for growing the mushrooms varies according to the type of mushroom. For instance, button mushrooms grow best on composted manure, while Shiitake varieties are grown in hardwood saw dust. Make sure to research and match the correct growing medium for the mushroom variety you choose.

    Grow Containers

    • You will need a dark, damp place to grow mushrooms, such as a basement. You also need a pan or box to contain your growing medium. A recycled wooden crate works well and can be re-used. Many kits come in a heavy cardboard box that can be used as a growing area. Any container that holds the growing medium will work well.

    Retaining Moisture

    • You will need clean rags to dampen. These are placed over the spawn to retain the moisture of the growing medium and the humidity around the mushrooms after you have planted the spawn. Use a spray bottle to keep the rags and soil damp. Use the rags for the first two weeks after planting the spawn.

    Harvesting

    • Use a soft brush to remove any growing medium from the mushrooms after you have picked them by hand. No other tools are required for harvesting.
