How to Dry Amanita Muscaria

Amanita muscaria is a mushroom that can be found growing wild in many areas of the United States. Many mushroom enthusiasts grow amanita muscaria mushrooms use them to make tea and for other medicinal purposes. Those who wish to keep the amanita muscaria mushroom for long periods of time should pick the mushroom and dry it. Dried mushrooms may be stored in an air tight container for up to six months before they begin to lose their flavor. Amanita muscaria mushrooms are classified as toxic, according to the North Carolina Cooperative Extension, so care should be used when handling or consuming them.

Things You'll Need

  • Wire mesh screen
  • Scissors
  • Oven
  • Plastic storage bag

Instructions

      Use scissors to cut a piece of fine, wire mesh screening that is large enough to accommodate the amanita muscaria mushrooms but small enough to fit inside the oven.

      Lay the whole mushrooms onto the screen with enough spaces between them to allow for air flow.

      Place the mesh into the oven and leave the door of the oven slightly open. Set the oven to "Bake" and choose the lowest temperature possible.

      Leave the mushrooms in the oven for one hour and then remove the entire screen from the oven. Turn the oven off and shut the door.

      Allow the mushrooms to cool to room temperature. Place them inside a plastic storage bag and place it in a cool, dry location until needed.
