A Guide to Growing Morel Mushrooms

Morel mushrooms are a popular edible mushroom with a distinctive honeycomb-shaped cap. These mushrooms can be grown almost anywhere, but thrive best in warm climates. If you are planning on growing your own morel mushrooms, it is important to first create an ideal area for the mushrooms to thrive. Once the mushrooms have reached several inches in height, their caps can be harvested and used in a variety of foods.

Things You'll Need

  • Shaded area
  • Large tree
  • Morel mushroom cuttings
  • Mulch

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase morel mushroom starters from a local gardening shop, or take cuttings from nearby wooded areas. If you decide to take cuttings, cut the mushroom as close to the base of the stem as possible, so the fungi has some nutrition before you transplant it to your garden.

    • 2

Choose a large tree that produces plenty of shade. Spread half an inch of mulch under the tree in the spot where you will grow the mushrooms.

    • 3

Plant the base of each morel's stem under the mulch, and then mist the mushrooms until the caps feel slightly damp.

    • 4

Water the mushrooms as needed. When the cap feels dry, mist the mushroom with some water. When the cap has grown to about six inches in height, you can harvest the caps. After several weeks, new caps should begin growing.
