Growing B+ Mushrooms From Rye Bag to Hay

Growing mushroom is relatively easy and the strain B+ is especially simple to cultivate. Given the Latin name Psilocybe cubensis, it is native in the Pacific Northwest. It is one of the most potent but least toxic of the psychedelic mushrooms. The caps are reddish cinnamon brown to golden brown, but get bluish purple if they are bruised. The mushrooms are also called "cow patty mushrooms" because they are often found growing in cattle pastures.

Things You'll Need

  • Hay bale
  • 2 cups of rye grain
  • Sharp knife or machete
  • Pillowcase
  • 1 tsp. crushed limestone
  • Large pot of hot water
  • Range top
  • Clear poly bag
  • B+ spawn

Instructions

  1. Growing Mushrooms in Hay Substrate with Rye Grain

    • 1

Use a knife or machete to chop up the straw into 1/2-inch pieces. Put it into the pillowcase and add 2 cups of rye grain and 1 tsp. of lime. Tie up the pillowcase and submerge the mix into the hot water. Let it sit for one hour.

    • 2

Pull the pillowcase out of the water and let it cool and drain. Pour the mixture onto a clean sterile surface. Open the poly bag and add a little layer of substrate and then a layer of spawn. Alternate the two until the bag is full and then tie it tightly. Puncture the bag 30 to 50 times with a sterilized knife.

    • 3

Store the bag in a warm environment such as a garage. The temperature should be kept around 70 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit if possible. When mushrooms begin to sprout, open the bag. Keep the substrate misted but not wet.

    • 4

Cut open the bag as the mushrooms grow. The substrate should be watered enough to stay damp but not soaked or the mushrooms will rot.
