How to Grow Mushrooms Inside

If you love mushrooms, you may think the only option is to buy them from the store. However, there are numerous ways for the mushroom lover to grow the mushrooms at home. Even without a proper garden space, kits are available that allow for growing mushrooms indoors in the smallest apartment. Kits are a way to become introduced to mushroom cultivation, and if space is at a premium, a way to keep the cost of mushrooms to a fraction of the store price.

      Visit a garden center to determine what types of indoor mushroom kits are available in your area. Mushroom kits are available for shiitakes, button, oyster and many other types of mushrooms.

      Read the instructions that are included with your kit. Different types of mushrooms require different forms of care. For instance, button mushrooms will bloom and grow best in a dark area, while others prefer full light.

      Set up an area where the kit can remain undisturbed until harvest time. This could be a small corner of an apartment, the basement or under your kitchen sink.

      Open the mushroom kit and follow the instructions for watering and recovering with the plastic or cloth included in the kit.

      Check the mushrooms daily. You should begin to see the mycelium web begin to form on top of the medium in two to five days. The first mushrooms should begin to appear in one week to a month depending on the variety.

      Follow the instructions, which may include keeping the mycelium medium moist or allowing it to dry.

      Harvest the mushrooms using a sharp knife to cut the stems at the soil level when the mushrooms have reached the desired size.

      Continue to care for the mushroom kit as directed. Most kits will provide two or more additional flushes of mushrooms after the first harvest.
