How to Grow Mushrooms From Scratch

Growing mushrooms at home is not as mysterious as you might think. Mushrooms need a growing substrate and a cool room free of contamination to grow in. A substrate is a wetted material, providing the mushroom a slowly decomposing material to feed on. The material must be free of bacteria; otherwise, your mushrooms will die or grow with green or pink spots, which ruin the taste of the mushroom. Starting mushrooms from scratch is easy as long as you're a clean worker.

Things You'll Need

  • Drinking glasses
  • 5 oz. vermiculite
  • 1.5 oz. brown rice flour
  • Water
  • Bowl
  • Foil
  • Pressure cooker
  • Spawn syringe
  • Matches or lighter for an open flame
  • Plastic trashcan
  • Clear plastic bag

Instructions

    • 1

Place the vermiculite in a mixing bowl and slightly moisten it with water. Stir it with a spoon, putting in as much water as the vermiculite can absorb.

    • 2

Spread the brown rice flour with the vermiculite and stir it together until it's thoroughly coated in water.

    • 3

Fill the glass with the mixture until only a 1/2 inch is left. Fill the last 1/2 inch with dry vermiculite.

    • 4

Cover the glass with a folded piece of aluminum foil. Fold the edges down over the glass.

    • 5

Place a tray at the bottom of a pressure cooker and place the glass onto the tray. Place about an inch of water at the bottom of the cooker. Close the lid and cook the glass for an hour at 15 psi.

    • 6

Fold the top layer of the foil up.

    • 7

Break up the spawn in your syringe by shaking the tube. Run the tip of the syringe over an open flame to sterilize it.

    • 8

Insert the syringe into the edge of the foil covering the glass and insert 1 to 1.5 ml of spawn into the substrate. Cover the hole with the other layer of foil.

    • 9

Place the jar in a place between 70 and 80 degrees F.

    • 10

Tip the jar out into a plastic trashcan after 10 days. Cover the trashcan with a plastic bag and allow the mushrooms to grow to full size. Mist the inside of the trashcan every day to keep the moisture up.
