Truffle Growing Guide

Truffles are one of nature's delicacies that is hard to find and consequently costs a lot of money. It has been a European staple for centuries but is more recently cultivated in the U.S. Truffles take special growing conditions and appear growing on the roots of trees. It was previously thought to be impossible to grow truffles but modern cultivation methods have made it a slowly burgeoning industry. There are still few truffle growers in the U.S. and the time and peculiar needs of the fungus are probably the reason. You can buy and grow inoculated trees but you need plenty of patience and time.

Things You'll Need

  • Soil Test
  • Lime
  • Shovel
  • Inoculated hazelnut tree
  • Water

Instructions

    • 1

Chose your site. Truffle growing requires an area with no competing vegetation and southern exposure.

    • 2

Test the soil which needs to be alkaline at a pH of 8 or higher. If the test shows a lower number you will have to amend the soil.

    • 3

Amend the soil with lime. You will need on average 8 lbs. of lime per 100 square feet to raise the pH of the soil a point. Iff you have a 6.5 pH and want to get to an 8 you will need 12 lbs. of lime worked in per 100 square feet.

    • 4

Dig a hole in the site that is 2 inches wider than the root ball of the incolutated hazel nut tree and 2 inches shallower. Pull the tree from the nursery pot and gently untangle the roots.

    • 5

Place the tree in the hole and back-fill with the soil that you had removed. Pat it down and water with at least 2 gallons of water.

    • 6

Water the tree when the soil feels dry 2 to 3 inches below the surface. Keep weeds and competing vegetation well away from the tree.

    • 7

Wait. It can take up to six years for the first truffles to appear. Care for the tree and watch for telltale bumps at the base. Once you spot those it will be four to five months before you can dig up your first truffles.
