How to Grow Mushrooms with Syringes

Grow mushrooms at home using spores and a simple substrate. A substrate is a material that rots, giving the mushroom spores a home to grow in. The spores are usually provided in a syringe. The syringe keeps the spores free of contamination until you are ready to inject them into the substrate. When growing mushrooms from the spores, keeping the work area and the substrate as free of contamination as possible. Always work with cleanliness in mind.

Things You'll Need

  • 6 oz. vermiculite
  • 1.5 oz. brown rice flour
  • Mason jars
  • Foil
  • Pressure cooker
  • Spore syringe
  • Lighter
  • Trash can or plastic bin with lid
  • Perlite
  • Clear plastic bag

      Put 5 oz. of the vermiculite into a plastic bowl and add a small amount of water to make the vermiculite completely moist, but not dripping.

      Add the brown rice flour to the vermiculite and mix together using a plastic spoon.

      Fill the mason jars with the material to 1/2 inch from the top. Fill the excess 1/2 inch with dry vermiculite.

      Tear a piece of foil that is two times the size of the mason jar top and fold the foil in half. Cover the jar with foil.

      Place a small amount of water at the bottom of the pressure cooker and place a rack at the bottom. Place your mason jar inside and close the pressure cooker. Allow the pressure cooker to cook at 15 psi for one hour, then let cool for another hour.

      Remove the mason jar from the pressure cooker. Lift up one layer of the aluminum foil.

      Shake the syringe filled with the spores until the spores break up. Heat the tip of the syringe with a lighter until the metal end is glowing to sterilize it. Let it cool.

      Insert the syringe into the foil at the edge of the jar and insert 1 to 1.5 ml of spores into the jar. Cover the hole with the folded-back layer of foil.

      Place the jar in an area of the home that is 70 to 80 degrees F. Mushrooms head will begin to appear in three to five days. Keep the mushrooms in the jar for 14 to 28 days as the white mushrooms spread.

      Tip the jar over and release the inoculated material into a plastic trash can or bin filled with a half inch of moistened perlite after the 28 days. Cover the container with a plastic lid orf clear plastic bag. Harvest the mushrooms once they are full size.
