Fill a small planting pot with a sterile rooting medium. Pour an inch of rooting hormone into the plastic cup. You can also make your own rooting medium by mixing together equal parts of perlite and peat.
Select a branch that is near the ground or center of the plant as these root better than branches taken from other areas. Take hardwood cuttings during the dormant stage of the plant in late fall and winter.
Cut the branch just after a leaf node near the base of the branch. This allows the branch to grow back. Do not remove more than one-twentieth the total size of the branch measuring from the tip of the branch.
Cut the branch into smaller sections, each with a couple of leaf nodes or more if possible. This is usually 4 to 6 inches. Cut the base of the cuttings at a 45-degree angle. Leave the top straight. Do not take sections from the topmost thin growth at the tip of the branch.
Dip the angled base of the cutting in the rooting hormone. Insert cuttings 2 inches deep into the planting medium. Place the pot in a humid and cool indoor area.
Transfer to medium-sized individual containers filled with potting soil after cuttings are rooted. Let new plants grow in containers and get well-established for the first season before moving to a permanent location.
