How to Root Mint in Water

Propagating mint takes little time, money and effort. Instead of starting with seeds or purchasing plants, increase your indoor or outdoor herb garden by propagating mint plants. With just a few sprigs of mint from a parent plant, you will be able to quickly increase the number of plants you have. Root your favorite varieties of mint in water, and give potted plants to friends to enjoy in teas and recipes, or just for the pleasing aroma.

Instructions

    • 1

Take 4- or 5-inch stem cuttings from a healthy plant. Cut just above or below a node, which is where a leaf is attached to the plant's stem.

    • 2

Remove the two lower sets of leaves from each stem cutting, along with any flowers or buds that are forming. This will encourage the cutting to grow strong roots rather than flowers.

    • 3

Place the sprigs in a glass with several inches of water. Check that at least one leaf node is in the water. This is where roots will grow.

    • 4

Place the glass where it will receive filtered sunlight or bright indoor light.

    • 5

Check the water level daily, and replenish it as it evaporates.

    • 6

Watch for roots to appear. In about one week, small white roots will begin to appear at the nodes and bottom of the stem.

    • 7

Allow the roots to grow a few inches in length before potting.
