Place the lucky bamboo plant in a brightly lit area receiving filtered light. Though the plant adapts to most light intensities, do not select an area of full or direct sun as the excessive heat can scorch the foliage. Plant growth is likely to remain unaffected in a little less light rather than excessive sun.
The lucky bamboo plant is usually grown and sold as a hydroponic plant that thrives in plain water. No soil is used, and marbles, rocks or polished stones are placed at the bottom of the container to provide mechanical support. The plant also grows easily in potting soil. Use well-draining all-purpose potting soil to ensure optimal growth. Keep soil very moist but not wet in the initial stages of growth after transferring the plant from water. Reduce moisture level after a few weeks.
Place about 1 inch of water and pebbles in the base of the container for lucky bamboo. The plant is very sensitive to a number of chemicals generally found in tap water. Use distilled water if possible. If using tap water, leave the water out for about 24 hours before using as this evaporates the chemicals.
When growing in water, fertilize the lucky bamboo every other month. Use one drop of liquid fertilizer designed especially for lucky bamboos. Change the water weekly as dirty or polluted water leads to rapid foliage decline. Remove all fallen leaves from the water as these start to decay and cause bacterial infections. The roots of healthy plants are naturally red. .You can also use a diluted all-purpose houseplant fertilizer.
