Can Mint Leaves Be Eaten?

Mint's heart-shaped leaves and lovely green color make it a welcome addition to the garden -- and the kitchen. Mint is edible, with one exception. Pennyroyal, a member of the mint family, can cause serious illness or even death when taken internally, according to the Family Health Information website.

  1. Uses

    • Mint is a perennial herb that provides delicious flavor, fresh or dried. Mince it and add it to marinades and dressings for meats or salads. Garnish lemonade with fresh, whole green leaves, or brew it to make a tea.

    Types

    • Mint comes in many varieties, each with its own subtle fragrance and flavor. Try spearmint and peppermint for traditional mint flavor, or lemon, apple, chocolate or basil mint. Not only do these mints taste great in recipes, but they release their fragrance when you brush by them in the garden.

    Considerations

    • Mint spreads through aggressive underground runners and can soon take over your yard. Plant it in a container set on the patio or sink the container into the ground. Trim it back occasionally to keep its compact shape.
