Mint is a common garden plant that comes in a wide range of varieties. Chocolate mint is actually a type of peppermint, and has a chocolate scent and flavor. It is capable of cross-pollinating with other mints and must be grown separately to retain its taste.
Chocolate mint looks similar to regular peppermint, but has reddish to brown stems and leaf veins. This plant has a smell and taste similar to that of chocolate liqueur. The chocolate taste becomes more pronounced when the herb is dried.
Chocolate mint cross-pollinates with most other types of peppermint, including apple, ginger and pineapple mints. According to Texas A&M University, chocolate mint may also hybridize with spearmint. Cross-pollinated plants tend to show a combination of the parent plants' traits, which may not be desirable.
Mint is a hardy, fast-growing plant that reproduces easily in North America. According to the University of California-Davis, it readily invades garden plots and wild areas. To prevent planted chocolate mint from invading the local environment, plant it inside an open-bottomed pot buried in the ground.
