Ornamental grasses are low maintenance landscape plants that come in a range of sizes, forms and textures. Fescue grass is a cool season grass with a clumping growth habit. A number of blue and gold foliage varieties are used as ornamental grasses in landscapes.
Blue fescue (Festuca cinerea) has narrow blue-green foliage and is also referred to as gray fescue. The grass produces blue-green flowers in summer. Blue fescue grows to a full height of 6 to 10 inches with an equal spread.
Transplant grass from containers during spring and early summer in a well-drained, fertile soil. Do not over water, as the plant has a low water requirement. Over watered blue fescue is prone to root diseases. Avoid excessive fertilizer application. Divide clumps every three to four years. Trim back brown foliage in late winter to improve appearance. Plant in full sun.
Plant close together to create borders and ground covers. Blue fescue is well suited for use in rock gardens. The fine texture makes it blend in perennial beds. Blue fescue is tolerant of salt and grows well planted close to salted sidewalks.
