Deer-Resistant Privacy Trees

The term privacy trees refers to the use of trees for creating living fences and screens in landscapes. Widely used trees include uniform shaped, dense growing evergreens. A large number of privacy trees are also deer resistant and work as living barriers to keep the foraging animals from damaging the landscape.

  1. Identification

    • Blue spruce is a large group of evergreen trees with numerous varieties, all of which are deer resistant, as cited by Peter Derano in Creating a Deer Proof Garden (2008). The taller growing varieties are well suited as privacy screens given their dense pyramidal forms. You can also grow blue spruce as specimen and ornamental plantings in gardens.

    Description

    • Depending on the cultivar, blue spruce trees grow up to 50 feet high with an 8-foot spread. Blue spruce trees have sharp, short needles and get their name from their distinct blue-green color. The needles are about ¾ inch long. Blue spruce trees produce cones in fall.

    Cultural Requirements

    • For optimal growth, plant blue spruce in areas of full sun. Though the trees also adapt to partial shade, the needle color is less intense. Plant in a well-drained, fertile soil and avoid planting in areas of high winter winds. Avoid watering trees during late day and water moderately. The trees are hardy in USDA zones 2 to 10.
