What Causes Dark Green Rings in Fescue Grass?

Fescue is a fast-germinating, cool-season grass. The coarse-textured grass tolerates compacted soils and heavy traffic. Fescue comes in a number of turf varieties and keeps its color year-round in areas with mild weather. A fungal infection causes dark green circles in the grass.

  1. Identification

    • Fairy ring is a common disorder of all turf grasses, including fescues, during summer and spring. The problem is characterized by the appearance of dark green, circular bands on grass. The diameter of the circles is anywhere from a few inches to up to 50 feet. The circles grow progressively larger every year.

    Cause

    • A number of soil-borne fungi lead to the dark green rings. Fungal activity causes organic matter in the soil to break down and release nitrogen. The rings of grass are often brown. A ring of mushrooms appears outside the green ring following heavy rains or irrigation. Unfavorable fungal growth conditions such as drought or cold make ring and mushroom growth cease.

    Management

    • Aerate affected grass well and rake out mushrooms. Remove affected grass to a depth of 12 inches. Refill with fresh soil and reseed or resod. Fungicidal control options are not highly effective.
