Winter Creeper Plants

Wintercreeper (Euonymus fortunei) is an evergreen, vinelike shrub that climbs with aerial roots. The plant is a native of Japan, Korea and China and is widely used as a groundcover. The fast growing plant also helps control erosion on slopes.

  1. Description

    • Wintercreeper grows 2 feet tall as a groundcover with a spread of up to 50 feet. The opposite, 1 to 2 inches long foliage is oval with silver veins. Some cultivars have yellow or white variegated leaves. One-third inch, light orange, inedible berries that last well into winter follow the inconspicuous small flowers.

    Cultural Conditions

    • The plant is hardy in USDA zones 5 to 9 and grows best in areas of full sun to deep shade. Transplant at any time of the year in well-drained soil in the same depth as the plant was in the container. Water weekly and apply water-soluble fertilizer during spring. The plant is hardy to low temperatures down to minus 20 degrees Fahrenheit.

    Varieties

    • The many varieties of wintercreeper include purple-leaf wintercreeper with dark purple winter foliage, emerald n'gold with yellow bordered leaves, kewensis with very small foliage and silver queen with silver white bordered foliage that turns light pink during fall.
