Houseplant Bug Killers

Houseplants are just as susceptible to infestation from insects and bugs as are plants growing outdoors. Buying healthy plants from reliable sources is among the preventative measures that you can take to reduce problems with bugs later. The use of insecticides is often required to control houseplant pests.

  1. Types

    • The Colorado State University Extension lists the use of insecticidal soaps, horticultural oils and neem for controlling common houseplant bugs.

    Description

    • Insecticidal soaps are among the more commonly used indoor plant insecticide. The product is the potassium salt derived from fatty acids. Neem is an extract from the seeds of the Indian neem tree that grows extensively in tropical regions. The natural insecticide retards growth of pests. Horticultural oils are diluted forms of petroleum and mineral oils that kill targeted bugs by smothering them.

    Targeted Bugs

    • Horticultural oils are highly effective for the control of spider mites, whiteflies and scales on houseplants. Neem-based products control a number of bugs including whiteflies. You can use insecticidal soaps for controlling spider mites and other pests in indoor plants.
