Fertilizer for Growing Hops

Hops (Humulus lupulus) are tall growing perennial vines with twining, fibrous stems. The beer industry uses the female flowers for taste and flavor. The plant grows from underground rhizomes. Timely and adequate fertilizing helps to improve the quality and yield of crop. The plant requires the three essential nutrients the most for adequate growth.

  1. Fertilizer Recommendations

    • Supply 3 lbs. of nitrogen to every 1000 square feet of hops. The plant has a relatively low requirement of phosphorus, requiring about ½ lb. for every 1000 square feet. Potassium requirement is similar to nitrogen at 3 lbs. for every 1000 feet.

    Site

    • Plant hops in well-drained soil and in areas of full sun that are shielded from high winds. Hops roots are highly sensitive to excessive moisture. Avoid planting in areas that have standing water. Recommended soil pH for growing hops ranges between 6.0 and 7.0.

    Planting Recommendations

    • You can plant hops in early spring after the last frost. Keep the rhizomes moist and cool until planting, and allow enough space between plants for them to spread. Space rows 8 feet apart with 2 to 3 feet between the plants. Established plants have a water requirement of 1 ½ inches per week.
