Jasmine That Is Not Blooming

Jasmine varieties include the common white jasmine, which grows 10 to 15 feet high bearing white flowers 1 inch in diameter. Plants that receive the proper care during the growing season and the rest period will bear flowers. Temperature, sunlight, humidity and pruning all factor into whether or not a jasmine plant will flower.
  1. Temperatures

    • Plants need a rest period during the fall to rest. During this time, place the plant in a room with temperatures between 40 and 50 degrees Fahrenheit for four to five weeks. If temperatures are above 65 degrees during this time, the jasmine won't bloom, but will grow. After the jasmine starts blooming in early to mid-winter, normal room temperatures above 65 degrees Fahrenheit are needed.

    Light

    • During the four or five weeks of low temperatures, the plant needs sunlight during the fall and winter days, but no artificial light after dark. The plant needs those hours of darkness without artificial light to rest. When the jasmine starts to flower, move the jasmine to a location where it will receive at least six hours of sunlight. Plants that don't receive enough sunlight will have few blooms if any at all.

    Humidity

    • Jasmines are very sensitive to stale and dry air. Plants need humidity during the growing and flowering season, but not during the fall and winter before blooming. Place a drainage tray filled with gravel under the jasmine container. Keep water in the tray to provide humidity around the plant. Do not allow the container to sit directly in the water. Jasmines don't like wet, soggy soil conditions.

    Water and Fertilizer

    • Water the jasmine plant only when the top 1/2 inch of soil is dry. Jasmines don't like wet or soggy soil. Following this watering guide will help the plant begin flowering in late January or February. Roots that are continually wet will reduce flowering. Fertilize the plant every two to four weeks when the jasmine is actively growing during spring and summer. Do not fertilize in fall and winter or the plant will not receive enough resting time and flowering will be reduced. Use a water-soluble fertilizer such as 15-30-15 (nitrogen-phosphorous-potassium) diluted in half.

    Pruning

    • Jasmine plants will start setting buds in late summer. Prune plants by August 1 if needed to remove stringers, dead branches or control the size of the plant. Any pruning done after this time will reduce blooming the following season. Removing branches and buds will reduce flowering, but extreme pruning will eliminate flowering the following season. Plants that are pruned to within 6 inches of the soil will branch out with new growth and provide more blooms
