Caring for Jasmine Vines

Jasmine is a twining vine that grows and spreads quickly and can take over if not pruned. Jasmine vines offer privacy when they have been trained to a trellis or fence. When they are in bloom, their white or yellow flowers perfume the air with a powerfully sweet scent. Jasmine is a hardy plant that doesn't require much care, but there are things you can do to enhance the vine's beauty.

Instructions

    • 1

Plant your jasmine vine in a well-draining spot that gets lots of sunshine.

    • 2

Prune your jasmine vines after the blooms die off in late summer. Trim the tops back to make the plant more dense, and remove any dead or leggy vines.

    • 3

Wrap the remaining vines around fencing or the slats of a trellis. They generally do not need to be tied, as they are very cooperative. They will cling and grow in whatever direction you encourage them to go.

Feed your jasmine lightly. Apply fertilizer in the spring a week or more after planting. The Alabama Cooperative Extension System recommends a tablespoon of 12-4-6 fertilizer around the base of the plant followed by watering. Fertilize again in spring and again in summer.
