How to Get Jasmine Shrubs to Bloom

Jasmine plants are semi-evergreens to deciduous plants that naturally grow as vines, but can also be grown as shrubs that require frequent pruning. The jasmine plants grow quickly and add about 12 to 24 inches in a year. The common white jasmine, also known as Jasminum officinale, produces long-lasting white, fragrant flowers that bloom in clusters from summer to fall. Jasmine plants require little care, grow well and bloom regularly if some simple conditions are met.

Instructions

    • 1

Plant jasmine shrubs in soil that is mostly sandy, as these plants need moist, well-drained and fertile soil.

    • 2

Grow shrubs in an area that is warm and has full to partial exposure to the sunlight. Jasmine shrubs bloom well if they have six or more hours of direct sunlight.

    • 3

Do not over-water the jasmine shrubs, as these plants need moist soil that is not soggy. Add compost or mulch to the soil to maintain moisture and increase growth of plants.

    • 4

Prune jasmine plants after the flowering period in fall to control growth, shape the plant and encourage new growth after the rest period that starts in fall and lasts until spring. Do not prune plants during summer, after new buds appear.

    • 5

Fertilize jasmine shrubs in spring, but do not feed plants after flowering and during the resting periods.
