Sweet Olive Tree Disease

Sweet olive (Osmanthus fragrans) is a large shrub or small tree ranging in height from 16 to 40 feet. The evergreen tree is a native of China and blooms with fragrant, small white or yellow flower clusters. Sweet olive tree is susceptible to a number of diseases.

  1. Botryosphaeria Canker

    • Botryosphaeria canker is a fungal disease that commonly strikes stressed Sweet olive trees and is characterized by wilting and die-back of branches, according to the Clemson Cooperative Extension. There are no fungicidal control options for the disease.

    Cercospora Leaf Spot

    • Sweet olive trees are likely to get infected with cercospora leaf spot, according to the Clemson Cooperative Extension. Cercospora leaf spot is caused by numerous fungi and is characterized by spots and lesions on foliage. As the disease progresses, the spots become brown and sunken. Control the disease with preventative fungicides and by keeping the foliage dry.

    Phytophthora Root Rot

    • Phytophthora root rot commonly infects sweet olive trees that are grown in poorly drained ground. The fungal disease is caused by the Phytophthora fungi and starts to rot the roots of infected plants. Early symptoms include discoloration and wilting of foliage accompanied with stunted growth and premature defoliation. There is no cure for the disease.
