Brown Spots on Lilac Bush Leaves

Lilac bush (Syringa vulgaris) is favored for its clusters of fragrant flowers in shades of purple, pink and white. Lilac bushes thrive in regions with cold winter and grow best in alkaline soil. Certain fungi cause brown spots on a lilac bush.

  1. Identification

    • Lilac bushes are susceptible to infection from a number of different foliage fungi that cause leaf spot diseases. Though the pathogens may differ, leaf spot diseases are generally characterized by similar symptoms.

    Symptoms

    • Leaf spot disease starts with the appearance of small brown dots or raised lesions on upper foliage areas. As disease progresses, the spots develop into yellow and brown patches that enlarge to cover entire leaf areas. Leaf spot disease causes defoliation of plants in severe cases.

    Management

    • Keep the plant area clear of fallen foliage and other debris to minimize spread of the disease. Try to avoid overhead irrigation as wet foliage is more susceptible to leaf spot-causing fungi. Watering earlier in the day helps foliage to dry better. There are no recommended fungicides for the disease.
