Is There an Evergreen Clematis?

Clematis (Clematis spp. ) are a large group of deciduous or evergreen vines that bloom in a range of flower colors. There are nearly 250 different varieties and hybrids of clematis, as cited by the Ohio State University Extension website.


Evergreen clematis add color to landscapes through the winter months.

  1. Rush-stemmed Clematis

    • Rush-stemmed clematis (Clematis afoliata) is an evergreen clematis native to New Zealand. The plant has a sprawling to semi-climbing growth habit and grows up to 10 feet tall. The fragrant flowers bloom in a shade of yellow green and often grow in clusters of five. Rush-stemmed clematis is hardy in USDA hardiness zones 8 to 9.

    Armand's Clematis

    • Armand's clematis (Clematis armandii) grows to a mature height of up to 20 feet and climbs with its twisting tendrils. The evergreen vine is native to China and is hardy in USDA zones 8 to 10. Armand's clematis blooms with 2½-inch wide, five-petaled, white flowers and has 5- to 7-inch long, dark green leaflets.

    Apple Blossom

    • Apple blossom (Clematis Apple Blossom) achieves a mature height of 20 feet or more and blooms with 2- to 2½-inch diameter, pink-tinged white flowers. The evergreen clematis variety is hardy in USDA zones 7 to 9 and has a vigorous growth habit.
